Side of the street

January 9, 2014

It lies exposed.
In the gutter of the street,
A carcass on its side,
beside which trundle ox carts
And men carrying baskets of wheat
On their heads.
They pass it by with their eyes not seeing,
Weather-beaten faces and tired eyes,
Staring into the distance, into the fading horizon
Towards the town and the markets
The clatter of commerce and shouts for barter.
They do not see that within this bulk
Hollow and empty, as they deem it to be,
A faint flower has stirred and risen.
Sheltered from the elements
And nourished by richness in the gloom,
It rises, petals, its delicate heart
And inches towards, cautiously,
Towards the brilliant sun
